Sierra Club awards Jacksonville group Friends of the
Neches River and Michael Banks 2009 River Protection Award
(Austin) The Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club awards Jacksonville group Friends of the Neches River and its Co-Chairman Michael Banks the 2009 Evelyn R. Edens Award for River Protection.
Sierra Club presents this award each year to commemorate the work of the Fort Worth area environmentalist who worked in cooperation with others to create Save the Brazos and the annual Texas Meeting on the Outdoors and who served on the Lone Star Chapter Executive Committee. This annual Award honors river conservation efforts of individuals and groups.
With this Award, Sierra Club applauds the successful campaign of Michael Banks and Friends of the Neches River which gained federal protected status for the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge. When City of Dallas and the Texas Water Development Board tried to block the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Services designation of the refuge with a lawsuit in favor of a major reservoir, Friends of the Neches generated over 20,000 contacts to the Service in support of the Refuge. The establishment of the Neches River National Wildlife Refuge is heralded as one of the recent major conservation victories in Texas.
dentist, Michael Banks played a key role in the grassroots
campaign by the Friends of the Neches River and he will accept
the Award for the group at a celebration dinner in Austin
on Saturday, April 10, 2010 at 6:30 PM at Chez Zee Resaurant.
The Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club invites the public to make reservations to attend the dinner by phoning 512-477-1729 or registering online at http://tinyurl.com/ygwktn2 before Friday at noon.
