Big Thicket Funding Needs Your Letters Now!!!
Brandt MannchenThe Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club urges you to
write a letter today to U.S. Senators Hutchison and Cornyn and U.S. Representative Brady
in support of funding for Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP). Appropriations bills are
being finalized now in the U.S. Congress. Urge the Congresspersons to support the
following three funding priorities to help protect more valuable Big Thicket lands in East
Texas:
1) The 2008 Land and Water Conservation Fund appropriation for BTNP from the Senate, of
$2.5 million, should be maintained or increased.
2) The 2008 Forest Legacy proposal in the President's budget of $1.5 million for the
Phase Two easement on the east side of the Turkey Creek Unit of BTNP should be adopted.
3) If the President's Centennial Challenge for national parks is funded then
acquisition projects should be part of that funding. This could help BTNP acquire
additional acres of sensitive lands that need protection.
