Forest Service Proposes Introduction of Prescribed Fire in Upland Island
Wilderness Area
Brandt MannchenThe National Forests and Grasslands in Texas had a
collaborative meeting in March to discuss a proposal to introduce prescribed fire into
Upland Island Wilderness Area (UIWA). The purposes of introducing prescribed fire are to
reduce the build-up of flammable vegetation and the reintroduction of the natural
ecological process of fire in Wilderness.
The Houston Regional Group and Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club were represented at
the collaborative meeting and took a tour to UIWA to view where fire is proposed to be
introduced. A concern that the Sierra Club has deals with doing as little to trammel
(control or manipulate) UPIWA as possible. The Wilderness Act calls for restraint from
humans to allow Nature to call the shots. Fire introduction could be beneficial for the
ecosystem but should not be aimed at recreating some vision of what vegetation should look
like. Fire should determine what vegetation occurs where on the landscape.
The Sierra Club will monitor and participate in the process which determines whether
this proposal is approved.
