Lone Star Hiking Trail Job Descriptions

The Lone Star Hiking Trail (LSHT) needs you! For 40 years the Sierra Club has maintained the 128 mile long LSHT, the longest, continuous, hiking trail in the State of Texas, located in Sam Houston National Forest (SHNF). We need trail maintenance section stewards, volunteers, tablers, hike leaders, assistance leaders, writers, a list-serve person, and a coordinator. A description of these jobs is listed below. There is something for everyone. Volunteer!!!

The LSHT is the longest primitive, low impact, backcountry, cross- country, long-distance, hiking trail in East Texas. The LSHT passes through or by Little Lake Creek Wilderness Area, Lake Conroe, Stubblefield Recreation Area, Huntsville State Park, East Fork of the San Jacinto River, Double Lake Recreation Area, Big Creek Scenic Area, Winters Bayou Scenic Area, and endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker habitat.

1) LSHT Coordinator - Coordinates the LSHT trail maintenance/hiking program.

Characteristics - Dedicated to the protection and perpetuation of the LSHT as a hiking only trail. Patience, persistence, big picture thinking, delegates responsibility, communicates well, and gets along with others.

Requirements - Requires outings leader, Red Cross first aid, and LSHT history/operation training. Outings leader and LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the Houston Sierra Club (HSC).

2) LSHT Maintenance Section Stewards - Responsible for surveying and documenting the condition of a section of the LSHT.

Characteristics - Self-motivation, good documentation, good communications.

Requirements - Must have LSHT history/operation training. Should have outings leader and Red Cross first aid training. Outings leader and LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the HSC.

3) LSHT Maintenance Volunteers - Responsible for conducting light trail maintenance activities on the LSHT like clipping vegetation, installation/removal of trail markers, and use of water protection techniques.

Characteristics - Enjoyment of the outdoors and a willingness to provide service to steward your national forests.

Requirements - Ability to work well with people and hike in SHNF.

4) LSHT Hike Leaders - Leads at least two hikes on the LSHT each year.

Characteristics - Leadership, patience, works well with groups, good communications.

Requirements - Requires outings leader, Red Cross first aid, and LSHT history/operation training. Outings leader and LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the HSC.

5) LSHT Assistant Hike Leaders - Assistant leader on at least two LSHT hikes each year.

Characteristics - Leadership, patience, works well with groups, good communications.

Requirements - Requires outings leader, Red Cross first aid, and LSHT history/operation training. Outings leader and LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the HSC.

6) LSHT Tabler Captain - Organizes and ensures the operation of the LSHT table at HSC monthly meetings and at other chosen tabling events.

Characteristics - Friendly, helpful, likes to meet people, good communications, good at organizing.

Requirements - Requires LSHT history/operation training. LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the HSC.

7) LSHT Tabler - Operates the LSHT table at the HSC monthly meetings and or other chosen tabling events.

Characteristics - Friendly, helpful, likes to meet people, good at communications, good at organizing.

Requirements - Requires LSHT history/operation training. LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the HSC.

8) LSHT Writers - Writes at least two articles each year about some aspect of the LSHT or SHNF.

Characteristics - Writes well, expresses thoughts well, makes deadlines.

Requirements - Requires LSHT history/operation training. LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the HSC.

9) LSHT List-serve Captain - Creates, maintains, and operates the LSHT list-serve to alert those interested in the LSHT of opportunities to participate.

Characteristics - Good with computers, makes deadlines, communicates well.

Requirements - Requires LSHT history/operation training. LSHT history/operation training will be provided by the HSC.ersary of the beginning of construction of the LSHT
