Leaving El Paso Friday evening, we’ll carcamp near the trailhead on the North Star Road at Upper Black Canyon Campground. The hike will begin on Trail 72, the Black Canyon Trail. Saturday night, we’ll camp somewhere near Black Canyon Box after a 7 to 8-mile day of hiking. Sunday will feature an exploration of Reed’s Meadow, after which we’ll return to our campsite and break camp. We’ll relocate a few miles back toward the North Star Road for our Sunday night camp. On Monday, we’ll hike back to our vehicles and return to “civilization.” We’ll get our water from Black Canyon, which runs year-round but will have to be treated, as usual. Black Canyon Trail sees little use, so we may have it to ourselves. Nighttime temperatures should be above freezing, and days will be quite warm.
