Backpacks
DATES: June 9-22, 2008 (Monday through Sunday, about two weeks)
NAME: Trans-Gila Wilderness Wander
PLACE: Gila Wilderness, north of Silver City, New Mexico
TYPE: Backpack
CLASS: Strenuous
APPROXIMATE LENGTH: 80 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 9,000 feet
LEADER: Laurence Gibson: (915) 309-5419 (C); lgibson@utep.edu
DESCRIPTION:
Escape the 100+ degree June heat with a long backpack in the high, scenic Gila Wilderness. We’ll have layover days at the river, and we'll camp overnight at mountain springs. There’s a possibility of re-supply about half-way through, where people with less time or desire can join or leave the trip. The itinerary is negotiable, but the concept is to begin at Sandy Point, making an initial thrust out to Mogollon Baldy, and then hike two large loops to the east and west. The re-supply opportunity will be at Sandy Point, probably around June 15 or 16. The “strenuous” rating reflects the rigors of such a long, multi-day outing. The leader will be following two huskies. Other dogs are welcome.
