Backpacks
DATES: February 8-10, 2008 (Friday through Sunday)
NAME: Powerhouse Loop Trail Backpack
PLACE: Mogollon Mountains in the Gila Wilderness, near Mogollon, New Mexico
TYPE: Backpack
CLASS: Moderate
APPROXIMATE LENGTH: About 5 to 6 miles round trip
ELEVATION GAIN: 1,000 foot loss and 800 foot gain

DESCRIPTION:

We’ll leave El Paso Friday evening and drive to our campsite on Whitewater Mesa. Leaving at least one vehicle at the Gold Dust trail head, we will drive up the Bursum Road to its junction with Forest Road #722.We will hike along scenic Road #722 to its junction with trail #810 which we will descend to Whitewater Creek at the location of the Power House. After spending a cold evening along Whitewater Creek, we will hike trail #207 down Whitewater Creek to its junction with the Gold Dust trail, #41, which we will ascend over the ridge and back to our vehicle left on Whitewater Mesa. Be prepared for cool days and cold nights, near or below freezing. Water from Whitewater Creek must be filtered, boiled or treated with iodine or other chemical. DESCRIPTION:

Join Liz and Jamie along with Biggie and Bridget for a leisurely stroll along the levee. There should be plenty of wildlife and good conversation to go along with the fresh air.

NAME: Sunset Trail Dayhike
PLACE: Franklin Mountains State Park, El Paso, Texas
TYPE: Dayhike
CLASS: Moderate
APPROXIMATE LENGTH: 6 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 500 feet

DESCRIPTION:

Join recently retired professor Bell as we return again to this great multi-use trail which wanders through the impressive Chihuahuan desert ecosystem. El Pasoans should remember the “use it or lose it” mantra when it comes to their public lands. FMSP is the largest urban wilderness park in the nation!

NAME: Munday’s Gap Dayhike
PLACE: Franklin Mountains State Park, El Paso, Texas

APPROXIMATE LENGTH: 4 miles
ELEVATION GAIN: 1,000 feet

DESCRIPTION:

Beginning early Saturday morning at about 8:00, we’ll meet at the crest of Trans-Mountain road and then we’ll follow a good trail along the ridge to the Gap, where we should have great views both to the East and West. Get out early and be back for lunch!
