Backpacks
DATES: April 12-13, 2008 (Saturday and Sunday)
NAME: Jordan Hot Springs Backpack
PLACE: Gila National Forest, New Mexico, northwest of the Gila Cliff Dwellings
TYPE: Backpack
CLASS: Moderate
APPROXIMATE LENGTH: 14 miles round trip
ELEVATION GAIN: 800 feet

DESCRIPTION:

We will leave El Paso early Saturday morning and drive to the trailhead near the Gila Cliff Dwellings. We will climb Trail 157 to a saddle and then descend into scenic Little Bear Canyon. At the Middle Fork junction, we will don our river-crossing shoes or sandals for the 15 times that we will cross the river in the last two miles of our hike to Jordan Hot Springs. Dramatic bluffs will rise on both sides as we approach our campsite. Bring a swimsuit, towel and any other items you may need to enjoy these hot springs. Remember, this is a public site and other people may also be enjoying it. Also, hot springs have certain hazards that you need to be aware of. The following website has a few details:

 After a leisurely Sunday morning breakfast, we will retrace our steps back to the vehicles.

NAME: Little Creek Loop Backpack
PLACE: Gila Wilderness, New Mexico, near the Visitor Center
TYPE: Backpack
CLASS: Moderate
APPROXIMATE LENGTH: About 9 miles round trip
ELEVATION GAIN: About 800 feet

DESCRIPTION:

We will leave El Paso Saturday morning and drive to our trailhead at Woody's Corral, near the Gila Visitor Center. We will follow Trail 160 as it climbs up “Thousand-Mile Hill” and drops down into the canyon of Little Creek. We’ll pick up water at the creek crossing and carry it up Trail 161 to our campsite near Bill's plaque. After spending the night along Little Creek, we will continue on Trail 161 to its junction with the EE Canyon Trail, which we will then follow up a side canyon and over the ridge. Then we’ll descend the EE Canyon Trail to Trail 151, which we will follow back to the Cliff Dwelling parking lot. Come enjoy a spring outing in a beautiful corner of the Gila Wilderness.
