Here is the info being sent out by the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce. We are urging all who are against dredging Packery Channel to write or e-mail the GLOI and remind them that the city "bought" the election last year by spending in excess to $350,000 to the opposition's $6000. Thanks for your help. Pat Text of the letter follows:HELP PACKERY
The North Padre Island Storm Damage Reduction and Environmental Restoration
Project - "Packery Channel" is progressing in a positive
manner through the Corps of Engineers review process. Decisions concerning
participation by the State in funding a portion of construction costs will
be made in the next 30 days.
There is concern that a clear message may not have been provided to the
Texas General Land Office concerning community support for the Packery
Channel project. Recent discussions with GLO staff indicate that the City
has submitted funding requests for three projects, including Packery
Channel. There is a request for all of us who want to make Packery a
reality to express our concern to City Council and the General Land Office
Commissioner that the Packery Channel project is a community priority. It
is a project that will protect the island seawall, and in-turn protect
public and private property. It is a project that will lead to public and
private development that will provide a much-needed economic stimulus for
our community. It is a project that the community overwhelmingly supported
in the recent April referendum, and a commitment of GLO funds is now needed
to move the project forward.

Dear Commissioner Dewhurst:
The North Padre Island Storm Damage Reduction and Environmental Restoration
Project - "Packery Channel" is progressing in a positive
manner through the Corps of Engineers review process. It is my
understanding that decisions concerning participation by the State in
funding a portion of construction costs will be made in the next 30 days.
Recent discussions with GLO staff indicate that the City has submitted
funding requests for three projects, including Packery Channel.
Considering the tremendous economic benefits to the Corpus Christi area
that the Packery Channel project will provide, this should be considered
the number one community priority. It is a project that will protect the
island seawall, and in-turn protect public and private property. It is a
project that will lead to public and private development that will provide
a much-needed economic stimulus for our community. It is a project that the
community overwhelmingly supported in the recent April referendum by a 60%
majority vote.
A commitment of GLO funds is now needed to move the project forward.
Please consider our request for funding for this project as our number one
community priority and a very, very important project and beneficial
investment for the entire Sate of Texas.
Respectfully submitted,
