NEW 2011 URANIUM STUDY by Rice University Scientist is Published
The report of a Texas uranium study by chemist Dr. Ronald L. Sass, Fellow at Rice Universitys James A. Baker III Institute, was posted on March 28, 2011.
The report is the summary of an Institute research project which explains the geochemistry of in situ uranium mining. It thoroughly examines the initial phase of estimating pre-mining baseline groundwater quality as well as the final phase of post-mining efforts to restore groundwater to its pre-mining quality.
In summarizing his study, Dr. Sass uses principles of chemistry, actual data submitted by a uranium company applying for a permit to conduct in situ mining in Texas, and Texas Commission of Environmental Qualitys (TCEQs) post-mining restoration records.
Among this investigations summary statements is the following:
"Since the recommended procedure for obtaining measured baseline concentrations is flawed, causing the resulting baseline concentrations for uranium and radium to be elevated above the undisturbed concentrations, I call into question the granting of any aquifer exemptions from the Clean Water Act. Furthermore, since post-restoration concentrations for radium and uranium are also generally high, the whole mining process should be closely examined and modified, or disallowed."
The report is entitled "URANIUM MINING IN TEXAS: WHY IS IT DONE THAT WAY?" and it can be found by going to:http://www.bakerinstitute.org/publications/GCC-pub-SassUraniumMining-032811.pdf .
