COASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB - May 2008 Meeting Minutes

The Coastal Bend Sierra Club met on Tuesday, May 20 from 11:30 am until 1:15 pm at the Central Library, 805 Comanche Street. Chairperson Pat Suter welcomed members and reminded them that meeting minutes are posted on the Coastal Bend Sierra website.

Treasurer Teresa Carrillo stated that she had contacted several banks and asked for current CD interest rates and that the Army Navy Credit Union had the best rate. Therefore, Teresa suggested opening an account there. Lois Huff made a motion that the Coastal Bend Sierra funds be moved to the Army Navy Credit Union and that Treasurer Teresa Carrillo, Vice-Chair Mina Williams, and Secretary Venice Scheurich be authorized to sign checks. Candice Mottet seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Pat Suter and Teresa also reported that approximately $200 has been donated to the club and will be used to defray expenses to provide the newsletter.

Lois Huff, Executive Director of the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation, reported that Earth Day/Bay Day was a success with near-record attendance. Lois expressed thanks to members of Coastal Bend Sierra for their continued support of this event through volunteer work and sponsorship. She also reminded members that Bayfest will be held this fall and that CBBF plans to participate because it is an excellent opportunity for outreach. She hopes that some of the Sierra members will participate in that event, too. Pat Suter expressed her disappointment that the Corpus Christi Caller-Times did not publicize ED/BD on the day of the event this year. Consequently, many people did not know about the shuttle service.

Hal Suter, President of the Beach Access Coalition, reported that this week’s Sargassum Symposium was informative and well attended. John Adams, Sierra Club and BAC member, was the person taking most responsibility for organizing the symposium. Several state agencies were represented and most coastal cities sent representatives. Hal thanked the Coastal Bend Bays Foundation for hosting the kick-off party for the attendees and presenters. Those interested can go to sargassum.org to view the proceedings.

Several Sierrans who attended feel that this was a good beginning for a change in the process of removal of sargassum from beaches.

Venice Scheurich, Conservation Chair, reported that the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle nesting season is off to a record start with 81 nests already reported on the Texas coast by May 19. In addition to eggs being incubated at the Turtle Lab on Padre Island National Seashore, corrals are being used on the beach at the 40 mile marker for the first time this year. Venice reminded members that the Coastal Bend website has a link to the Kemp’s ridley and that that site has been recently updated.

Mina Williams, Vice-Chair, reported on the Toxic Water Workshop with Dr. Rich Abitz which was hosted jointly by South Texas Opposes Pollution and Coastal Bend Sierra on May 17. More than 80 South Texans attended the six-hour session in Kingsville. After the workshop, many participants went to the mining sites southeast of town.

Before adjourning, Pat Suter reminded members that Lone Star Sierra Club will hold their summer meeting in Port Aransas on Saturday, July 19. She expressed her thanks to Nancy and Carol Kilgore for offering their home to Lone Star Sierra as the meeting site.
