COASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB MEETING MINUTES  September 2013

On Tuesday, September 3, the Coastal Bend Sierra Club (CBSC) met from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm in the La Retama Room of the Corpus Christi Public Library at 805 Comanche Street.

Chairperson Lois Huff opened the meeting by calling for comments on or approval of minutes from the May meeting; the minutes were approved as posted on the CBSC Website.  Lois stated that CBSC currently has 458 individual members.

Lois then called on Lone Star Sierra Chairperson Hal Suter for an update of Lone Star activities.  Hal reported that the Executive Committee (ExCom) met in Ft. Davis last month where details of the ongoing transition after Ken Kramer’s retirement were discussed.  Also discussed at that meeting was the National Sierra project on membership diversity.  Hal further reported that he and Pat Suter were in Austin on August 15 to attend the preliminary meeting which set the time table for the upcoming contested case hearing re a proposed LNG project for this area.  While in Austin, they also met with leaders of the state AFL/CIO organization.

On a local level, Hal stated that he, Pat, and Teresa Carrillo worked at the Sierra Club table at the Energy Efficiency Fair on August 20.  In addition, these three members attended a meeting of Earthshare on August 30.

Lois asked members present to help complete the list for the OARS (local club activities) report which she will file with Lone Star Sierra this week.  She then asked for reports on other topics.

Venice Scheurich reported that some citizen groups and county officials in Goliad continue to work within the legal system to protest uranium mining in their county.  They are appealing the TCEQ ruling which granted a mining permit in the county, and their attorney has filed briefings with the 5th Circuit of Appeals protesting EPA’s granting an aquifer exemption within the proposed mining area.

Carolyn Moon presented an update and led a discussion on potential drinking water safety issues within the Corpus Christi area.

Joyce Jarman and Pat Suter serve on the Industry and Long Term Health Committees within the local area.  Joyce reported that there had been no summer meetings, but she noted that the local Environmental Justice group had won a legal case against the Javelina Refinery this summer re excessive benzene releases.  Joyce and Pat are concerned that membership on the community’s Long Term Health Committee does not include representatives from Javelina Refinery, and they intend, at the next meeting, to suggest that membership be adjusted to remedy that omission.

Mina Williams follows activity at Padre Island National Seashore’s Sea Turtle Science and Recovery Project.  She reported that this sea turtle nesting season documented an excess of 150 Kemp’s ridley nests on the Texas coast as well as several green and loggerhead turtle nests.  Mina also stated that Dr. Donna Shaver, who heads the Project at Padre Island, was nationally honored by the National Park Service as the recipient of the Excellence in Natural Resources Research Award.
