COASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB MEETING MINUTES May 2013

The Coastal Bend Sierra Club (CBSC) met at the Main Library on Comanche St. from 12 noon until 1:40 pm on Tuesday, May 7. Chairperson Lois Huff opened the meeting and reminded members that minutes of previous meetings were posted on the CBSC Website. Secretary Venice Scheurich stated that a correction was needed in the March 2013 minutes. "Armendarez" should be replaced by "Armendariz."

Lois reported that CBSC needs a membership chair since Danny Lucio’s new position with Battleground Texas will not leave enough time in his schedule to continue in that role. She asked those present to suggest names of members who may be willing to accept the position of membership chair.

Hal Suter, Chair of the Lone Star Sierra Chapter, reported on the Awards Banquet in Austin on April 6, at which both candidates nominated by CBSC were announced as winners and were honored. Sister Elizabeth Riebschlaeger received an Award for Special Services and Dianna Wray received the Award for Environmental Reporting.

Hal also summarized legislative deliberations and status of some of the bills being discussed and acted on in the current legislative session. This was followed by members recounting some of their recent discussions with legislative aids on bills designed to limit legal action in environmental disputes.

Carolyn Moon shared her concern over a matter of drinking water safety discussed at the Corpus Christi Bays Foundation Forum on May 6. The issue concerns how backflow events occur in private water lines which allow non-potable water from nearby lawn sprinklers to enter water lines serving individual households. The group named Corpus Christi Safe Drinking Water is urging local citizens to support their efforts with signatures to bring about a referendum so that the Corpus Christi City Council would be required to act to ensure safe drinking water for residents. Lois agreed to place discussion of this item on the next CBSC agenda.

Joyce Jarmon, who serves on the Community Long Term Health Committee, reported that representatives from Flint Hills and TCEQ discussed fracking in the Eagle Ford Shale development and water use in this month’s meeting. Joyce stated that it is clear that two of the state’s regulatory agencies, TCEQ and the Railroad Commission, have very little enforcement authority over some water use practices in the oil/gas fields.

The remainder of the meeting time was dedicated to planning for the Membership Bash and Fundraiser which is scheduled from 5:00 until 7:30 pm on May 16 at the home of Jeanne Adams at 215 Louisiana. All members have received an announcement detailing the evening’s events and asking them to contribute items for the silent auction. Lois plans to mail an invitation to all members this week.
