SIERRA CLUB April 2004 Meeting Minutes
The meeting started off with a discussion of the Earth Day/Bay
Day
events at the Naval Air Station on the weekend of April 16 and 17. All
agreed that is was a success, with a reported 30,000 persons attending.
It was noted that a goodly number of Corpus Christi municipal personnel
were actively involved;, along with the environmental groups. One Sierra
member summed it up: " Exhaustive but worth it."
Venice Scheurich, a turtle patrol member, reported that the
drilling activity on
the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) has markedly increased and that
very heavy equipment is being used. The activity has also commenced
at
the old well site at Yarborough Pass. She said one truck actually had 22 wheels,
which she counted twice.
NOTE: The projected weekend PINS Sit-In (April 24-25) was
cancelled.
Chris Wilhite from State Sierra emailed this message "A few days ago I sent an
email describing a volunteer meeting and campout on Padre Island National Seashore.
Due to weather and other factors, that has been cancelled. We will instead
meet at
the Southern Plains Field Office at 2906 Medical Arts in Austin. The meeting will
begin at 6:30pm. ..
Ken Jobe, Recycling Chair, stated
that he saw a "glow of hope"
for more city recycling: At a recent City recycling committee meeting
the group adopted a "Neighborhood Improvement Program", a projected trial
project
in specific areas of the City where the recycling rate is low. The committee would help
the neighborhood association to write a newsletter, etc. A proposed pilot project with the
Morningside Neighborhood group is in the works. In addition, the committee is looking at
City-wide events such as the 4th of July parade as another way to encourage
recycling. .
