COASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB GROUP MEETING MINUTES  March 2014

The Coastal Bend Sierra Club Group (CBSCG) met on Tuesday, March 4 in the Retama Room of the Corpus Christi Public Library at 805 Comanche Street from 12:10 am until 1:10 pm.  After opening the meeting and reminding members that the minutes of previous meetings are posted on the CBSCG Website, Chairperson Lois Huff read Treasurer Teresa Carrillo’s report, which showed a checking account balance of $799.40 and a total of $8,269.33 in the three CD’s.  Lois then reported that the current number of individual memberships is 493.

Under new business, members decided to request that Lone Star Sierra personnel notify the chair or the conservation chair of CBSCG prior to making statements to the public or media, or participating in discussions on matters of uranium ISL/ISR mining regulations with representatives of industry or government officials.  The rationale for this request is that currently only counties within the Coastal Bend Group’s geographic area have uranium activity, and several members of Coastal Bend Sierra have followed this activity closely.

In other new business, members discussed a recent report in the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, which stated that TXDOT has extended the public comment period until March 18, 2014, on the Harbor Bridge replacement project.  As stated in the CBSCG minutes of January 7, 2014, CBSCG is not taking part in discussions of location for the new bridge, but the Coastal Bend Group did join other environmental groups in requesting that the comment period be extended so that all pertinent documents relating to impact on neighborhoods and the environment could be reviewed.

In a Lone Star Sierra Chapter update, CBSCG member Hal Suter, who serves on the Lone Star Executive Committee, reported that the next meeting of that committee will be in the Rio Grande Valley during the first weekend of April.

Under topics of old business, members decided it is time to start planning for the annual fundraising Membership Bash, which is usually held in mid-May.  Possible dates of May 15 or May 22 were mentioned as possibilities, and Chair Lois Huff agreed to look into finding a location for this year’s event.

In other old business, members decided to participate in this year’s Earth Day/Bay Day celebration at the sponsorship level, and they spent considerable time discussing topics to emphasize in displays at the CBSCG booth.  Since the Sea Turtle Science and Recovery Project at Padre Island National Seashore has been supported by Sierra for many years, Venice Scheurich and Mina Williams will ask PAIS staff for sea turtle information for distribution, and Lois will design and have printed bookmarks with the picture of a sea turtle along with a list of other projects on which CBSCG members work.  Mina and Venice will also supply posters outlining Sierra’s work on groundwater protection in the areas of in-situ uranium mining and hydraulic fracturing.  Also, it was decided to ask all Sierra members to save their copies of the monthly Sierra magazine so that they can be given to visitors at our booth who are interested in Sierra work and membership activities.
