COASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB GROUP MEETING MINUTES  February 2014

The Coastal Bend Sierra Club Group (CBSCG) met in the La Retama Room of the Corpus Christi Public Library, 805 Comanche Street, on Tuesday, February 4, from 11:30 am until 1:35 pm.

After calling the meeting to order and reminding members that meeting minutes and agendas are posted on the CBSCG Website, Chair Lois Huff asked for the treasurer’s report.  Treasurer Teresa Carrillo’s report showed a balance of $799.40 in the checking account, and a total value of $8,231.44               for the three CD’s held by the Coastal Bend Sierra Group.

In new business, the first item discussed was whether CBSCG members wanted to participate in Earth Day/Bay Day this year, and if so, to what extent the Group will be involved.  After discussion, it was decided that Lois will email members and, perhaps, send a card notifying members that donations are needed to fund future activities.  It was decided that our level of involvement at the sponsorship level will depend on members’ response to the request for financial contributions.  Carolyn Moon moved and Teresa Carrillo seconded the motion, that Coastal Bend Sierra will be involved in next April’s Earth Day/Bay Day, but the sponsorship level will be decided after the response from members for financial contributions is known.  The motion carried.

This was followed by a brief discussion of how our Sierra Group might become involved with other local environmental groups in the community in working on issues of broad concern.  One of these coming issues is the matter of hosting candidate forums prior to the 2014 upcoming elections.

On another matter, as noted on the CBSCG Website’s latest entry under “South Texas Uranium News,” the EPA is hosting a public meeting on February 11, 2014, in Victoria to receive comments on an Aquifer Exemption request by a mining company seeking a permit for in-situ uranium mining (ISL/ISR) in Goliad County.  Mina Williams and Venice Scheurich, who have researched and followed developments on uranium activity in South Texas for several years, are working on CBSCG’s official comments, which will be submitted to EPA at the February 11 meeting.  Members agreed that CBSCG’s official comments would be submitted on the 11th by Mina and Venice.

In other new business, Lois alerted members of intentions by the U.S. Navy to conduct training activities in the Gulf of Mexico that would use active sonar and explosives, and stated that details are available at www.ATTEIS.com.

In additional new business, Lois reported that a group at the University of Texas Law School working on Environmental Justice has become involved in discussions about the location of the new Harbor Bridge, and they have contacted Hal Suter.  Lois moved that Hal be the contact person within Sierra for that group.  Pat Suter seconded the motion, and it passed.

Before reports were made by members who monitor standing committees, all present welcomed Hugh Fitzsimons III, who is a candidate for Texas Agriculture Commissioner in the upcoming Democratic Primary election.  Mr. Fitzsimons answered members’ numerous questions about agricultural practices and water availability as rapid Texas population growth continues.

In the matter of standing committee reports, Joyce Jarmon, who attends and reports on the community’s Industry/Long Term Health committees announced that Jack Pope has agreed to join her in attending and reporting on these committee activities in the future. Joyce also circulated a report on air monitoring in the refinery area.

Carolyn Moon, who reports on city sustainability matters, reported disappointment with the new City of Corpus Christi’s Litter Ordinance.

Mina Williams monitors and reports on sea turtle news, and she stated  that it was recently announced that the international project to restore and protect the Kemp’s ridley, the most critically endangered sea turtle, is in danger of being defunded. Teresa Carrillo moved that CBSCG send a resolution stating our opposition to defunding to the appropriate federal officials.  Carolyn Moon seconded the motion and it passed.

At 1:35 Carolyn Moon moved that we adjourn and Pat Suter seconded the motion.  The motion carried.
