OUR NEXT COASTAL BEND GROUP SIERRA CLUB MEETING
March 21, 2006
Time: 11:30 - 1pm
Place: Central LibraryCOASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB February 2006 Meeting Minutes
The Coastal Bend Sierra Club met from 11:30 am until 1:10 pm at the Central Library on Comanche St. on Tuesday, February 21.
After Chairperson Pat Suter called the meeting to order, she mentioned that the January meeting minutes were posted on the web and asked for a treasurers report. Treasurer Teresa Carrillo stated that the recent deposit of $685.63 reflected money donated by several members to help defray club expenses.
Chairperson Suter then announced that she and Mina Williams had attended the City Councils Town Hall Meeting on the 20th and that she had queried council members present on the expenses for anticipated road changes regarding building Festival Park. Council members present did not know how those expenses would be covered. Chairperson Suter also announced that the Council might discuss the Padre Island Beach Closure situation at their March 21st meeting, but the agenda is not yet out.
Mina Williams reported that the Kemps ridley recovery plan would be discussed at a meeting of stakeholders in Houston on February 23rd. Some members of that group will push strongly for the delegates to agree to sponsor a resolution asking the upcoming world meeting of turtle scientists in Crete to declare the Gulf of Mexico off of Texas as officially recognized habitat for the Kemps ridley sea turtle.
Hal Suter attended the Lone Star Executive Committee meeting in Austin on January 21st and 22nd and stated that Lone Star Sierra has endorsed several candidates for statewide offices in the upcoming primaries. For members interested in particular races, Hal has a complete list of Lone Star endorsements.
Lois Huff reported that this years Earth Day/Bay Day will be at Cole Park on April 22. Joyce Jarmon moved and Teresa Carrillo seconded a motion that Coastal Bend Sierra Club have a booth at the event. The motion carried. Carlos Truan suggested that Coastal Bend Sierra Club become one of the sponsors of Earth Day/Bay Day and he made a motion to that effect (seconded by Hal Suter). The motion carried and Senator Truan volunteered to chair a committee to raise the necessary funds. Chairperson Suter appointed him to chair such a committee and most members present immediately donated to the fund. On another matter, Lois Huff reported that the Bays Foundation meeting on March 13th would have for its program, The Wind Farms in Kenedy County.
Joyce Jarmon attended a recent meeting of the Community Long Term Health Group and reported that local industries have been investing in infrared cameras which are capable of detecting benzene leaks in pipes that otherwise would go undetected. Thus far, the average benzene emissions for 2006 are below the 2005 average. It is hoped that this technology is one of the reasons for decrease in current emissions.
