COASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB December 2005 Meeting Minutes
The Coastal Bend Sierra Club met at 11:30 am at the Central Library on Comanche St. on Tuesday, December 20.
After Chairperson Pat Suter called the meeting to order, the first order of business was to elect, by acclamation, Teresa Carrillo to the office of Treasurer. Teresa consulted with outgoing Treasurer, Judy Tor, and reported that the current balance in the treasury is $9,543.96.
Several members had attended the City Council meeting at 10:00 am and they discussed the public comments made and speculated on possible Council action on the matter of closing the beach in front of Holiday Inn on Padre Island to vehicular traffic. Member Hal Suter remained at the Council meeting and used his cell phone to inform the group of the ongoing discussion of this matter at City Hall.
In other business, Joyce Jarmon and Pat Suter reported that results from this areas seven new air monitors are being reported on the TCEQ website as well as on the University of Texas website. Most of the monitors are event triggered, but two measure more than eighty chemicals continuously. Results show that many hazardous chemicals are being emitted, but so far, the emissions are just slightly below the maximum allowable level. However, Pat expressed concern that no research is being done to study the effects of interactions of these pollutants on areas involved.
Correction to November 2005 Minutes: The name given to the State Parks Superintendent was wrong; it should have been Walt Dabney instead of Walt Mabrey.
The meeting adjourned at 12:50 pm.
