Next Meeting: Tuesday December 19, 2000
SEASONS GREETINGS!
- The next meeting is scheduled for December 21, and will be held at the
Art Community Center as usual.
TOPIC: ELECTION of the Executive Committee and
Discussions of Election on Local Issues
Art Community Center, 100 Shoreline
Lunch, 11:15 a.m., Business meeting, 12:15 p.m.
(You may bring your lunch to the business meeting if your
time is limited.)This month we will again elect members of the EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE. Unfortunately, we have not had any volunteers or nominations for any of the positions. At the time this is written, I am not even sure the current office holders are willing to serve again. Many of us have held these offices for several years and really would like to have someone else take the lead. We have had a volunteer to OUTING CHAIRMAN. Vaughn Westheimer (316-993-8325) will plan and lead some trips if he knows what type of trip is wanted. And Richard Biddle of Victoria (512-575-8271, ext 233) wants to organize a recycling program in that city. Please call these people and let them know of your interests.
- COMMENTS FROM THE CHAIR
With the election of the new president still in doubt as this is written, the position of the senators and our local representative in Congress becomes even more important. After all, it is Senator Hutchison and Representative Ortiz who have succeeded in getting authorization for the federal portion of the cost of dredging of Packery Channel. Note that the funds have not been appropriated yet. But we will still have to deal with the mind set that this issue represents. One of our city council members said on this issue I do not care what the people of Corpus Christi want. I care only about what my supporters want. Translated, this means only those people who gave him money (and lots of it) count.
And speaking of Packery there is a petition circulating in Corpus Christi to insure that the issue of Packery Channel be put on the ballot next April. This is the time when we elect our city council representatives. Most of the ones on today will run for their same positions then. So more of the same for next year. Please sign a petition at various locations which are listed in the new alternate newspaper,
The OBSERVER. This paper is FREE at locations all over town. MAYBE WE CAN MAKE OUR VOTE COUNT IN CORPUS CHRISTI.
