SIERRA CLUB December 2003 Meeting Minutes

The meeting was in two parts: the election/selection of the CB Sierra Club
Group Executive Committee Officers and the Committee Chairs for 2004,
and a slide show of Bill Mauldin’s newspaper cartoons about
environmental issues of the ‘70’s.

The 2004 officers are Chair: Pat Suter; Vice-Chair: Mina Williams;
Secretary: Frank Hankins; Treasurer: Judy Tor.
The Chapter Delegate to the State is Hal Suter.

Committee Chairs are: Membership and Publicity: Kathy Griffith;
Air Quality: Joyce Jarmon; Political: Hal Suter & Mina Williams;
Environmental Justice: Frank Hankins; Waste/Recycle: Ken Jobe;
International Population: Sheril Smith; Marine: Venice Scheurich;
and Pat heads Parks/Refuges… And every Club member’s "vote"
and thanks go to Cheryl McGrath who has volunteered to stay on
as Webmaster.

The unanimous reaction to Bill Mauldin’s satirical cartoons was that
they –alas—are not out of date. You can show them today and show
the continuity of the struggle for cleaner water, air, for husbanding our
natural resources, etc. There was also a unanimous decision to improve
the picture quality of the slides and show them in this area.

Bill Mauldin became well known, revered by the troops, for his World War II
cartoons of ironic wartime humor depicted through the antics and thoughts
of two up front soldiers. His cartoons have a bite. Example from his book,
Up Front (1945): Here his two guys, Willie and Joe, are sapping for mines
in front of a jeep. one guy with the detector hovered over a spot and the
other
one on the ground. They are looking at each other with obvious concern.
A small sign just off the road next to the jeep says ACHTUNG MINEN. In the
jeep a one star General is saying, "Don’t hurry for me, son. I like to see
young men take an interest in their work."

That tragic-comedy runs through all of Mauldin’s works, including the slides
we saw. Mauldin won the Pulitzer Prize for cartooning in 1945 and l959.
He served in the Army 1940 – 1945. His wartime drawings appeared in
The Stars and Stripes, the armed forces newspaper.
