SIERRA CLUB October 2002 MINUTES
Sierra Club met Oct. 15, with 12 members present. Pat Suter, Chair, reported
$12, 820 on hand. A Garage Sale was set for next Spring.Pat announced that on Oct. 26 the Regional Water Conference for South Texas
and Border will be held in Mercedes. Pat said that currently there are no river flow
provisions for wildlife, citing a San Antonio proposal to pump water out of the
Gaudalupe instead of letting it go to bays and estuaries. No new news from the Corps of Engineers re Packery Channel; however, the
Corpus Christi City Council passed a CYA North Padre Island Development
Act-- to sell $10.5 Million Packery bonds, thus relieving the City of obligations
for the bonds.Local recycling has decreased drastically. HEB stores no longer carry recycled
products. We need to increase consumption, make a better market. Ask for recycled
paper products, as a starter.Teresa Carillio reported that the Third Annual South Texas Wildlife and Birding
Festival will be held in Kingsville November 22-24. She added that a guide to birding
in that area had been commissioned and paid for by the Kingsville Convention and
Visitors Bureau. (C.C. C&VB please copy.)Kathy Griffiths attended the statewide Texas Parks and Wildlife Expo September 23.
She said there were people "from all over an enormous number." In addition to lots
of commercial booths, the Texas General Land Office, sponsor, also had a booth with
free handouts.Frank Hankins, Sec.
