COASTAL BEND SIERRA CLUB GROUP MEETING MINUTES  January 2014

The Coastal Bend Sierra Club Group (CBSCG) met at the La Retama Room of the Corpus Christi Public Library, 805 Comanche Street, on Tuesday, January 7, from 2:50 pm until 4:10 pm.  Prior to the general meeting, the Executive Committee met from 2:15 until 2:50 pm.

After calling the meeting to order and reminding members that meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the CBSCG Website, Chairperson Lois Huff read the treasurer’s report which she had received by email from Treasurer Teresa Carrillo.  The changes from the December 2013 report were that two checks, $38.10 for printing and $100 for postal services, had been written.  Regarding membership, Lois stated that CBSCG has 417 members and 179 of them have provided their email addresses.

As announced on the notice which was mailed to all members last week, one main item on the agenda for today’s meeting was to be the election of officers.  Nominees were:  Lois Huff, Chair; Mina Williams, Vice-Chair; Venice Scheurich, Secretary and Conservation Chair; Teresa Carrillo, Treasurer; Hal Suter, Political Chair and CBSCG Delegate to Lone Star Sierra Chapter; and Grassroots Communication Chairs-- Joyce Jarmon (Industry), Jack Pope (Port of CC), Carolyn Moon (Sustainability).  Chair Emeritus Pat Suter moved that the nominees be elected; the motion was seconded by Jack Pope.  The motion carried by acclamation.

Brief reports were made on some of the topics which members of CBSCG monitor regularly.  On the topic of uranium, Venice Scheurich and Mina Williams reported that the U.S Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans ruled on December 9, 2013, that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) could review a petition filed on behalf of several Goliad County residents.  The petition, filed by attorney James B. Blackmon, Jr., appeals the aquifer exemption that EPA granted last year to Uranium Energy Corp. (UEC) so they could begin in situ uranium extraction in Goliad County.

On the topics of hydraulic fracturing (fracking) and water, members shared and discussed recent news reports and personal observations on oil/gas production in the Eagle Ford Shale area.  In particular, it was noted that some environmental groups are protesting Disney’s involvement with a fracking industry and are circulating an online petition to protest that affiliation.  Also, there was considerable discussion of the recent report by Jennifer Hiller in several Texas newspapers on water usage in fracking.  It was also noted that a statewide group, Texans for Responsible Hydrocarbon Extraction (TRHE) is in the process of forming.

Carolyn Moon, who monitors the city’s sustainability efforts, reported that their group has not met recently since the city is in the process of reorganizing its planning division.  Joyce Jarmon attends monthly meetings of the local Industry/Long Term Health Committee, and reported that she is looking forward to expressing some of her thoughts and concerns about a particular local industry at the next meeting.  Jack Pope reports news from the Port of Corpus Christi (POCC), and he reminded members that the POCC Website has an online sign-up form for citizens interested in attending an environmental meeting at the Ortiz Center on January 16 and 17.

Lois Huff announced that she was contacted by a local university student who expressed interest in Outdoor Activity and Recreation (OARS).  Lois compiled a list of field trips members present said they would be interested in, and she will ask the student to consider if she would consider leading OARS activities for CBSCG.  Lois also stated that she had been contacted by a member of CBSCG who asked if our group is considering participating in discussions on the designated route for the new harbor bridge.  After discussion, members decided that CBSCG would not become involved in this matter.

Hal Suter, Chair of the Lone Star Sierra Club Chapter, announced that the next meeting of the Lone Star Executive Committee (ExCom) will be in Austin on January 26.  Hal agreed to carry a CBSCG resolution expressing our group’s request that National Sierra be included in any future official discussions of the sale of a 13-acre parcel of beach property which is contiguous to and north of the Padre Island National Seashore.

In new business, the consensus of members present was to designate the CBSCG officers to draft a resolution (see preceding paragraph) which Hal Suter would present to Lone Star’s ExCom at their January meeting.
