The Coastal Bend Sierra Club met from 11:30 am until 1:00 pm at the Central Library on Comanche St. on Tuesday, January 17.
After Chairperson Pat Suter called the meeting to order, the December meeting minutes were approved and the Treasurers report was given. Treasurer Teresa Carrillo stated that we now have an account at the International Bank of Commerce (IBC) on Everhart and that $265 had recently been contributed by several members to help with expenses incurred by publishing and mailing the monthly newsletter. Membership Chairperson Kathy Griffith reported that we have approximately 400 members on the newsletter mail out list.
Joyce Jarmon, Edie Cosgrove, and Pat Suter reported on their recent attendance at several community committee meetings. Of particular interest were their comments re the Community Advisory Councils planning for potential emergencies and the Ports security measures which are now in effect.
Mina Williams and Venice Scheurich reported on their attendance at last weeks meeting of the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council where the Texas Shrimp Association went on record in support of the annual 200-mile closure to Gulf of Mexico shrimping from May 15 to mid-July. Mina, Pat, Venice, and Lois Huff plan to attend the Gulf of Mexico information and planning meeting in Port Aransas on January 19. In addition, Mina ,Pat, and Venice will attend the Kemps ridley meeting in Houston on February 23.
Hal Suter will be in Austin on January 21 and 22 for the Lone Star Executive Committee meeting. He will encourage Lone Star to actively support the Texas Open Beaches policy. Also, he will ask the Conservation Committee if they wish to sign on to the Sea Turtle Restoration Projects resolution to designate the Texas Coast as known nesting habitat and to designate adjoining Texas waters as an important migratory corridor and foraging/breeding habitat for the Kemps Ridley Sea Turtle.
Hal and Pat reminded the group of the John Muir program in Austin on January 28 and 29. It is a fund-raiser for Lone Star Sierra. The actor who plays John Muir does the same presentation at Yosemite National Park each summer season. The presentation on the 28th will be at 7 pm and the one on the 29th at 2 pm. Both will be at Wild Basin Preserve in the Austin area.
