Where Texas Ranks Compared to Other States in Electrical Generation from Renewable Resources: Map and Chart
Wind
Texas has more power from wind turbines than any other state
in the nation, with more than 8,000 MWs of potential. Texas is currently expanding its use of wind power through the approval of more transmission lines to West Texas.
Sierra Club supports the need for additional transmission
lines, though we do share concerns about their location
and potential impact on endangered species, habitat,
water resources and viewsheds.
Solar and other Resources
Texas has the potential to lead the nation in production
of solar manufacturing and the use of solar power.
During the 2009 Legislative session, Sierra Club
worked with our allies to attempt to pass an Emerging
Technology Renewable Portfolio Standard for solar,
geothermal and new renewable resources, as well as
a statewide solar rebate program. Austin Approves Development Agreement for Chinese Solar Manufacturer
Public Citizen and several other Texas environmental organizations released a study on February 2, 2009 on solar power's job creation and energy savings potential in Texas.
